Cream Teas at Valence

After last year's enforced "miss", Sharon Millward's Cream Teas are back again, though in a slightly different guise.  You can support the Stan Millward Association by booking your place at Sharon's home, in Valence, and look forward to: a pair of beautifully crafted scones smothered in rich cream, unctuous strawberry jam and a layer of fresh fraise plus a drink of your choice and free entry into a daily raffle. Who could ask for anything more?

Luxury Cream Teas

These will take place from 3pm to 5pm on 8 Saturday afternoons through June, July and August. Each event will be limited to 30 guests and tables will be spaced at generous distances to conform to current regulations. Here is what you will get:

  • Two generously-sized scones, each one split and filled with delicious strawberry jam, followed by a layer of luscious fresh strawberries which will be covered by wonderful thickly-whipped cream and then topped by the other light-as-a-feather half scone. Each scone will be freshly baked that morning by Lydia Jackson, owner of Gâteaux in Tusson; she is making these delicious confections to support the association. Sharon says "these are the best scones I have ever tasted"; high praise indeed!
  • A drink of your choice from freshly made tea or coffee, various wines, and a selection of beers; your choice should be made when you finalise your reservation
  • Upon arrival each guest will be automatically entered into a free raffle to be drawn the same day at 4:30pm. There will be 3 quality prizes to be won each afternoon

All of this for only €10

As usual, all profits will be donated to Association Améthyste, Dépt d'Oncologie, CHAngoulême (aka Girac).

Each Cream Tea must be reserved and paid for in advance. You can pay by online bank transfer or cheque, payable to Association Stan Millward. A provisional booking will be acknowledged by e-mail and then confirmed upon receipt of payment.

  • You can reserve places at more than one Luxury Cream Tea; orders will be accepted on a “First Come, First Paid and Reserved” basis
  • Takeaway orders for these delicious “Luxury Scones” can be placed and paid for with your reservation
  • An alternative vegetarian and/or vegan wedge of cake will be available for order, too – either as part of your Cream Tea or to Takeaway
  • Also, non-dairy scones for your freezer can be ordered

All 18 beds on the residential ward now have such a cabinet.

Each cabinet costs over €1,000. Congratulations everyone for your stalwart support, long may it continue. It has made such a positive difference to the everyday lives of each patient.

An additional four fundraising events are rather special, too. The owners of the multi award-winning Maison de Charente have joined with us to offer you a mouthwatering selection of tasty food, washed down with a glass of Roland Vilneau's excellent rosé wine. Also available is a generous glass of the renowned locally-produced pineau from l'Oisellerie – my absolute favourite for the past nine years !

Please see the attached posters for full details of the menu – which is offered at the exceptionally great price of 12€50 per person. For those of you who prefer not to eat foie gras, there are alternatives – to include pilons ( drumsticks ) marinaded in herbs and gentle spices then slow-roasted to retain the flavours and other tasty options.......By all means ask for further information.

2021 Summer programme at La Maison Maria Casarès

This year's summer programme is as busy as usual.

But it is only for a short run, each weekday
from 26th July
until 19th August.
with a special event day on Sunday 15th August.

Included in the programme
  • afternoon tours through the site
  • kids afternoon spectacle with snacks
  • early evening performance & apéritif
  • evening theatre followed by dinner
Events are on every week-day through the festival. Best to book in advance to guarantee a place 05 45 31 81 22 resa@mmcasares.fr

Fragments d'autre

Discover the love correspondence between Maria Casarès and Albert Camus.

Equipped with headphones, you can walk at your own pace on this tour which will take you to different places in the park. At each stage, you will listen to an exchange between the two lovers which will give way to the music of Aurélien Dumont and will accompany you at each of your steps.

A journey through the lands of Maria Casarès, to meet these two sacred giants of theatre and literature. An intimate and captivating experience.

To Never Meet the Last Hour

Memories of the Logis de la Vergne

Accompanied by a guide and in a group, visitors will set off to discover the history of the Logis de la Vergne (listed in the inventory of historical monuments) and particularly the journey of Maria Casarès: her life as an artist, refugee, a woman of the twentieth century. Beyond the traces left by its illustrious owner, this visit will also be an opportunity to discover the work of the visual artist, Joël Andrianomearisoa.

The summer 2021 will have a special flavor. This is the last summer when visitors will be able to discover the home as Maria Casarès left it: necessary renovations can wait no longer. We asked Joël Andrianomearisoa to come and intervene in these spaces and to propose installations in the Logis, to put into perspective with all his sensitivity and his poetry this issue of time passing and traces of the heritage that remain.

Come on, Ollie... in the water!

Mamie Olive, an almost helpless great-grandmother who was Olympic swimming champion at the London Olympic Games in 1948, meets her great-grandson Olivier… who is afraid of water!

A meeting that seems to start off badly; what does this energetic little boy have in common with his great-grandmother, who is recovering from a broken hip and who, on top of everything else, is taking away his room on the pretext that she can't climb stairs?

But that's without counting on Grandma Olive's tricks to help Ollie get into the water. And what if what seemed to drive them apart ended up bringing them together?

The show is followed by a snack served in the gardens of the estate.

C.R.A.S.H d'après l'affaire dite de Tarnac

In 2008, an event immediately classed as a terrorist attack by the media: an ultra-left group based in Corrèze sabotaged the TGV railway. One of the biggest legal scandals of the last 20 years ensued.

If this affair has left such a mark on people's minds, it is because it was covered by the media even before the courts had time to deal with it. It has become a "pure" product of our time: a product of communication of a state policy and a product of journalists in search of sensations.

In this show, we go through the different stages of the trial of this "Affaire de Tarnac". With an acerbic humor, we will try to shine a light on the crazy situation into which the defendants and the judicial system were both dragged.

The show is accompanied by an aperitif to be enjoyed in the gardens of the estate.

Martyr

A teenager like any other, but Benjamin wreaks havoc in his school.

Overcome by a mystical crisis, his extremist ideas upset his mother, his classmates and his entire school. Only his biology professor tries to bring him to his senses by committing himself to reading scripture and challenging him point by point. Can girls wear bikinis while swimming? Do sex education classes have their place in a school? What about the theory of evolution in natural science lessons?

Little by little, Benjamin wraps himself in his "martyr's" clothes, revealing the gaping flaws in his family, school and even the theological education systems.

With icy humor and colorful characters, this show invites us to see the insidious web that extremism weaves amongst the young, and the difficulty in countering it.

To laugh about it, and try, perhaps, to better guard against it.

The show continues with a dinner outdoors, in the park, "L'Italie en Charente" prepared by our associate cook Romain Portelli.

End of Lockdown Approaches

On April 30th, President Macron announced a number of steps leading to getting French life back to normal. At the time, these plans were more hopes rather than confirmed changes since the infection rates at the end of April were still very high although they were showing signs of falling.

You can view the Interview with the President and subsequent gouvernment reports.

Detailed below is our understanding of the changes we can expect.

  • discotheques remain closed

Localised Variations

There is considerable variation on infection rates throughout France. From April 29th, opening restrictions can be tightened to suit local conditions so although there may be no nationwide restrictions, local Cities & Departments may apply their own tighter, localised limits.

There are three criteria for when tighter controls may be applied:

  • the incidence rate exceeds 400 infections per 100,000 inhabitants (8 departments currently exceed this rate: Paris itself and 6 departments around the capital, plus Marseilles)
  • a sudden increase in the local incident rate
  • there is potential to overwhelm local intensive care services

Health Pass

The exact details on this are still being discussed in Parliament. It is expected that in situations where crowds tend to mingle or are confined, admission will require the presentation of a Health Pass - a paper or digital document or papers issued by health professionals and laboratories. This is intended to prove that either

you have been vaccinated against the virus

or

you have tested negative in the two preceding days

2021 Income Tax Return

by Isabelle Want

Oh no! It is that time of the year again when you have to fill in your income tax form. It’s all in French and there are lots of pages and boxes to fill in!! And they may have changed it again!!!

Well, worry not, help is at hand. I will try to explain it to you and make it simple. However, I will only cover the most common revenues; for more technical information, contact me directly.

Changes

I noticed only 1 change this year: on the 2047, it is easier to enter interest, just fill box 2TR (in section 260).

Important dates

You declare your revenue for the tax-year 2020 (1st January - 31st December). However, the tax office accepts that you use the revenue corresponding to the UK tax year.

You can start filling the forms online (only if it is not the first time) from the 08th of April. Depending on where you live, you must complete your declaration by:

  • 26th of May 2021 for Departments 1 to 19 (Charente is 16)
  • 1st of June 2021 for Departments 20 to 49
  • 8th of June 2021 for Departments 50 and above (Deux Sevres is 79 and Vienne 86).

The deadline for paper forms is much earlier: you must send or deposit your paper tax form before 20th of May 2021.

The result (your tax bill!! - called Avis d’imposition) is sent to you from mid-August.

Then in September 2021, the French government will adjust the monthly amount that they take out of your current account according to your declaration or, if you are an employee, adjust the % tax deduction from your salary.

What forms and how do you fill them in?

2042

The 2042 is the blue form that everybody has to fill in and it is on this form that you report what you have summarise what you filled in on other forms. But there are different versions of the 2042:

2042:

This is the normal blue 2042 form that everyone has to fill in - no exceptions.

  • Check or fill in the information on page 1 (name, address, etc).
  • On page 2, check or fill in the information asked for (marital status, etc) and make sure it is correct as they can give you allowances or discount (invalidity, number of children living with you, etc).

2042RICI:

This is the form on which you report things that give you tax credits such as having kids at college, lycee, etc or doing some work on your house related to saving energy and ecology.

Note that this year, the boxes for employing a gardener or a cleaner, and giving to charity is on the normal 2042.

2042C:

This is the form to complete if you are under the French health system via an S1 (you are receiving a state pension).

  • You need to tick box 8SH (declarant 1) and/or 8SI (declarant 2) to avoid paying Social charges on your interest.
  • Box 8TK which was on the last page on the normal 2042 before is now on this form. This is the box that people with government pension or UK rental need to tick.
  • You can also find box 8VL which is the 17.7% tax credit on your dividends. Those boxes are on the last page of form 2042-C.

2042C Pro

If you are self-employed in France, this is where you fill in your professional revenue.

This is also the form used to declare revenues from Gites or chambre d’hôtes as a non-professional.

From 2044

This is the form to fill in if your rental income is more than €15000 per year.

Form 2047

This is the purple form (or pink) on which you enter your revenue from abroad. It is better if you start with this one and then report the result on the other forms. Here is how to do it:

2047 Section 1

  • Enter all your pension revenues (even those from civil servant that are taxed in the UK) on page 1, section 1 in the box called "Pensions, retraites, rentes”.
  • Be careful, you now must tick the box stating if the pension is public (ex-civil servant) or Privé (private and state pension/old age). So, if you have both, tick both boxes.
  • You then have to report pensions to the pension section on the 2042, page 3, section 1,
    • line 1AM (or 1BM for declarant 2) for pensions taxed in France (state pension and private pensions)
    • and line 1AL (or 1BL for declarant 2) for pensions from UK government employees such as teachers, civil servant, military, NHS, etc).

2047 Section 2

Section 2, on page 2 is where you put the interest you earned on savings in the UK. And yes, ISAs and Premium bonds are taxable in France as you are French resident! So, you have to fill them in at the bottom of page 2 in the box 260 “intérêts”. Enter the country of origin, then you write the amount on line 2TR.

Then you report the amount in line 2TR, page 3, section 2 of the 2042.

You also need to tick box 2OP on form 2042, page 3 if you want the interest to be taxed according to the rest of your income and not at 12.8% flat tax.

2047 Section 4

In section 4, you enter the revenues from house rental abroad.

  • then report on section 6 to get the tax credit (because it is taxed in the UK)
  • and report on line4BE and 4BK, section 4 of the 2042

If revenues from rental are more than €15,000, you have to fill in the 2044 form.

2047 Section 6

In section 6, you put the revenue from government employee pensions (military, police, NHS, civil servant, etc) and rental income from property in the UK (those will always be taxed in the UK whether you are French resident or not).

Then you report the amount in line 8TK, last page of the 2042C.

This is because those revenues/income get a tax credit in France equivalent to what the tax would be on it in France as they are taxed in the UK. You must enter the gross amount (before tax for pensions or expenses for rental).

3916:

If you have a bank account outside France, then you have to declare it on this form (section 1 and 4). One form per account, or if you have a lot, on a blank A4 paper.

Complete the Form

Don’t forget to date and sign the forms!! If it is your first, add an RIB statement and copy of your passport.

The official exchange rate for 2020 is 1.13 (that is the average of last year). You can get another rate from your local tax office; use theirs if it is lower than 1.13. If you you ask the official Paris tax office, they will tell you to use the rate from the “banque de France” on the day you got paid or you can use the average for the year.

If your pension has been directly transferred to your French bank account, just add up all the figures for last year as long as it is a gross amount (not taxed at source).

Summer programme at La Maison Maria Casarès

This year's summer programme is as busy as usual - despite the necessary vigilance for Covid-19.

But it is only for a short run, each weekday
from 27th July
until 20th August.
with a special event day on Saturday 15th August.

Included in the programme
  • afternoon tours through the site
  • kids afternoon spectacle with snacks
  • early evening performance & apéritif
  • evening theatre followed by dinner
Events are on every week-day through the festival. Best to book in advance to guarantee a place 05 45 31 81 22 resa@mmcasares.fr

Les Fantômes d’Alloue

available in English
Tour the site and discover the story of Maria Casarès in an original presentation where the ghosts of six great theater writers live in different places on the estate and Maria Casarès reigns supreme over this community of artists.

With humor, Rémi de Vos takes us on a playful approach to theater, the career of Maria Casarès and the links that unite actors and authors.

This stroll will allow you to discover the interior of the Logis de la Vergne reconstituted for the occasion in the performance hall as well as various places in the Domaine's gardens.

Deux Rien

A duet of poetry and clown mime for the whole family.
Two nothing is the story of two beings, a young man and a young woman. What are they doing? Nothing. Twice nothing. They are sitting there, sharing a bench just big enough for the two of them.

So they take care, write, invent an elsewhere and choose to go into the real world through the game. There are shoes, hats, an apple but above all two bodies that meet and match in music.

Between dance, mime and clown, a burlesque duo where the movement will tell a story, the gesture will be a word and the emotions will become dance.

The show is followed by a snack served in the gardens of the estate.

Prodiges

Over a drink, attend a strange home sales meeting!
Three young women stand before us. They are home sellers for a famous brand of kitchen accessories. The Beginner is here for the first time. The other two, the Monitor and the Dealer, will introduce her, before our very eyes, to the secrets of sales and public speaking, while competing in patter to be real little prodigies of commerce and conviviality.

And in the same way that they experience the solidity of the famous plastic boxes, they plan to tell us the story of an evolution: that of humanity but also ... of women.

It is about time and progress, freedom and success, storage, verticality, aesthetics and malleability of plastic ...

The show is accompanied by an aperitif to be enjoyed in the gardens of the estate.

Les Noces

Lili and Réda get married in Alloue: a satirical comedy about an unlikely encounter between "the countryside" and "the suburbs".
At dusk in front of the wall in the heart of the large courtyard, you will be invited to the preparations for a somewhat special marriage between a Sevranais (a Parisien from St. Denis) and an Allousienne.

One morning, Lily's grandmother wakes up in a state of great confusion; she is convinced that the land is home to only one department: the Charente (where she spent all her life).

Her language has also gone wrong, she begins to confuse words, to invent others.
When Lily announces her marriage to Réda (Sevran by birth) the grandmother is overjoyed. In order not to upset her grandmother, Lily decides to get married in Alloue, in the purest Charente tradition.

Réda’s mother, who dreamed of offering her only son a lavish marriage, does not hide her huge disappointment. Faced with the determination of her son and daughter-in-law, she nevertheless resigned herself. The wedding will therefore take place in Alloue on a rainy winter Saturday ...

After the show, enjoy dinner in the garden prepared by Romain Portelli.

Calling Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers to come and lend us a hand: help us keep the bar, prepare and serve meals for the dinner show, or just disseminate information around your home ...

Depending on your availability and your desires, contact us on 05 45 31 81 22 or at communication@mmcasares.fr. Volunteering for the Summer Festival means eating with the team the dishes of Romain Portelli, our chef for the season, benefiting from the unlimited storytelling visit, Les Fantômes d'Alloue and sharing the festival's experience on a daily basis!

Income Tax Time

Paying your tax through PAYE in the UK mostly shields you from having to deal with the Inland Revenue and you forget what the end of year keruffle is like - if you ever noticed. Here in France, of course, everyone needs to fill in their tax forms and submit them on-time. Fortunately the French system works on calendar years rather than the archaic April 5/6th; this makes it much easier to categorise everything.

Usually we have until the end of May to file our paperwork; this year the date has been pushed back because of the pandemic and now the final dates are sometime in June. A few years back everyone was expected to complete their return online though if this is your first year or you have no Internet, you still make a manual statement, on paper to the office in Confolens or wherever. In summary, for 2020 the final dates are:

  • Online: Depts 01-19: June 4th (Charente & Charente Maritime)
  • Online: Depts 20-54: June 8th (Dordogne)
  • Online: Depts: 55+ June 11th (Duex-Sevres, Vienne & Haute-Vienne)
  • Paper: June 12th
If you miss your date you may be penalised with a fine.

To access your personal space on the impots.gouv.fr website, you need a 13 digit "tax number" which changes every year. Our helpful correspondent, Isabelle Want, has prepared a guide (PDF) on how to get this number. If you already created your personal space last year, you can also ask to receive your number by email.

Click on "Receive your tax number by email"
Isabelle has also published a presentation on How to Declare Your Tax Online (PDF) and a review of Income Tax Forms for 2020 (PDF) - both very helpful if you want to file your own returns or even just for information. Filing your own tax return is not that difficult but you do need to be organised in collecting details of all your income - in euros!

Isabelle also publishes a monthly newsletter which you can get delivered to your inbox; as well as a copy of her article published in Etcetera magazine, she includes timely information, recipes and lots more. You can sign up for the next newsleter, browse past issues or read other practical information on living in France on the agency website.

Thanks Isabelle!
